Primare, a Swedish manufacturer of high-end hi-fi equipment, has recently announced a new BD32 universal player that plays 3D Blu-ray Discs, SACDs and DVD-A, in addition to regular CDs and DVDs. The company also claims that its latest player has the ability to play any audio file format natively or after a conversion. While this is impressive, this Swedish Blu-ray spinner appears very similar to the US-based Oppo's universal disc player, the BDP-95.
This isn't surprising when you consider that Primare has based the BD32 on Oppo's cheaper BDP-93 model. The BD32 shares similar video processing components with the BDP-93 and has improvements that are focused on the audiophile crowd. The Swedish company has included its own audio stage as well as several custom-engineered power supplies, which are supposed to reduce distortion in audio signals. There's also a pair of balanced XLR outputs--the three pin variety--that keep those audio signals free of distortion when they're on their way to an amplifier or receiver.
While the BD32 does appear to improve on Oppo's BDP-93 in some ways, its 3,250 pound (US$5,120) price tag in the UK could be hard to swallow. That's a little over five times the price of Oppo's flagship universal player, the BDP-95, which goes for US$999.
